Corrections — The Overnight
The Overnight is a daily morning news brief made with AI. Sometimes we get things wrong. When we do, we say so publicly and fix what we can.
How the show is made
- Made with AI. AI language models write the script, the voice is synthetic, and the anchor, Chip Sterling, is an AI-generated character. The pictures behind the stories are AI-generated illustrations, not photographs of the events.
- Checked by a person. A human producer reviews each episode's script and the finished video before it is published.
- Sourced. A story runs only if at least two independent news outlets have reported it. Stories about deaths, violence, attacks or disasters must also be confirmed by a major wire service or public broadcaster. Every episode's description links the sources for every story.
- Jokes never add facts. Chip Sterling's commentary is opinion and framing; every fact comes from the reporting we link. Stories about death, violence, disaster or abuse get no jokes at all.
What we correct
- Corrections: factual errors — a wrong name, number, date or place, or a claim our sources don't support.
- Clarifications: a story that was accurate but misleading, or missing context that changes what it means.
- We don't correct opinions or jokes. But a joke that states or suggests something false is a factual error, and we treat it as one.
What happens when we get it wrong
A published video can't be edited, so the correction goes next to the video instead. When we confirm an error, we:
- Pin a comment on the episode, on every platform where it ran, saying what was wrong and what is right.
- Add a correction note to the episode's description or caption, where the platform allows it.
- List it in the log below, with the date.
We don't delete episodes to hide mistakes. We remove an episode only when keeping it up could cause real harm — for example, a false claim about a private person — and we list the removal here too.
